Dr. Muhammad Zaeem Zia (Urdu: محمد ضعیم ضیاء ) is a Pakistani healthcare professional and Fulbright[1][2] scholar from Gilgit Baltistan, currently serving as the District Health Officer in Islamabad. He gained recognition for his impactful strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic[3], effectively controlling the virus's spread in Islamabad. Subsequently, these strategies were adopted by other provinces in Pakistan. In acknowledgment of his exceptional efforts against COVID-19, Dr. Zaeem Zia received a Presidential award[4] and was also recognised and got appreciation by Mike Pompeo[5] the State Secretary of the United States.

Career[edit]

Dr. Zaeem Zia's career spans pivotal roles within Pakistan's healthcare landscape. He served as Provincial Coordinator for the Medical Technicians Program, contributed as Assistant Director of Programs and Deputy Director of the Prime Minister's Health Program, and held the post of Assistant Director of Health Services in Gilgit-Baltistan. His expertise expanded in roles as Director of Health Information Systems and Deputy Director of Planning for the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan. Additionally, he served as District Health Officer for Hunza and Nagar Districts before assuming his current role as District Health Officer in Islamabad. As a public health professional, he is working in the areas of program management, health systems, procurement, development, drug licensing and issuing, dengue control[6], Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNC&AH), and Family Planning[7]. He worked in collaboration with NCOC, NIH and MoNHSR&C to implement COVID-19 emergency response in Islamabad which was then taken up by other provinces of Pakistan as well.
