My Perfect Console is a podcast created by Simon Parkin. In each episode Parkin interviews a guest who chooses five games that they would like to immortalize on their very own fictional video game console. In between talking about the five games, Parkin asks questions about the guest's life story.
Guests have included video game makers as well as public figures from the world of film, television, and comedy. One of Parkin's goals is "speaking about games in an intelligent way to audiences who are not yet convinced of their value."[1]
Notable Episodes[edit]
The episode with Phil Fish, the co-creator of Fez, was notable in that Fish had not done many interviews since the cancellation of Fez 2. Parkin asked Fish about why he cancelled Fez 2 and Fish revealed he "wasn't feeling it to begin with" and he had become "disillusioned with everything."[2] At the end of the episode, Fish named his fictional console the "Fez II." Fish's console was chosen by listeners as their favorite at the end of 2023.
Video game creative director Jake Solomon broke the news that he is planning to start a new video game studio on his episode of My Perfect Console. Solomon had previously worked at Firaxis Games for two decades. He told Parkin that his new studio's game would not be a turn-based stategy game like his previous work on the XCOM game franchise and instead would be a systems-based, simulation-style game. "I found that I wasn't that excited about doing another turn-based strategy game just because—not because the genre isn't amazing, that's where I've spent my life—but I felt like I didn't have anything more to say in that area."[3][4][5][6][7]
Erik Wolpaw, the co-writer of the Valve games Portal and Portal 2, made news on his episode by talking about why Valve has not yet made Portal 3. He explained that there is a large opportunity cost to working on a game at Valve which is a smaller company with a flat structure with few management layers. “The thing is, Valve is not a giant company,” Wolpaw told Parkin. “I think people sometimes think it is because of the outsize influence of Steam, but it’s not really that many people."[8][9]
Another notable episode featured veteran game developer Peter Molyneux as a guest. Parkin asked Molyneux about times where he had over-promised features that would be in his upcoming games. Molyneux expressed remorse for these incidents: "What I should have said in every interview is 'everything I say, take with a pinch of salt.'"[10] Molyneux later poked fun at this tendency by naming his fictional console "The Exaggerator."
Parkin recorded a live show of My Perfect Console on September 14, 2023 at the WASD x IGN video game event in London, England.[11]
Reception[edit]
My Perfect Console was recommended by The Guardian on April 15, 2023 as a "charming series" where the "interviewees are insightful."[12]
My Perfect Console was selected as one of the 50 best podcasts of 2023 by Time Out magazine. Editor Joe Mackertich wrote, "Simon Parkin is one of very few journalists capable of writing about gaming with the depth, wit and intelligence (unfortunately) usually reserved for art and cinema."[13]
Vulture selected My Perfect Console as one of the 10 best podcasts of 2023. They noted, "My Perfect Console is just less than a year old, but it’s already shaping up to be a vibrant historical record of the medium."[14]"
WBUR included My Perfect Console as one of their six best podcasts of 2023.[15]
