Draft:Nicknames for Hungarian first names

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The use of the given or first name is considered formal and cold, especially when talking about family members, relatives or acquaintances. Therefore these names are used in their shortened nickname forms.

These nicknames are used not just to show closeness but as to draw a distinction between people as sometimes there are people with the same first name in the family, workplace or other community. If these people received their nicknames in their childhood they often get stuck with them even in their adulthood (e.g. Puskás Öcsi, whose real name is Ferenc Puskás)

In these cases the nickname forms of the given first names are more common: one called István is usually Pisti, Pista or Pityu; one called Zoltán is Zoli; László becomes Laci; Erzsébet becomes Erzsi or Bözsi and Mária becomes Mari etc.

As there are different ways to form these nicknames most first names have different nickname forms. The way in which one can form nicknames can change too. Previously people wouldn't have recognised nicknames people use today, but there were nicknames which are not in use nowadays.

Nicknames can be categorised into four main categories:

  • nickname made by clipping the first name

  • nickname made by clipping and adding a diminutive suffix to the name
  • nicknames made by reduplication or partial reduplication of the name
