OffTheRecord commonly shortened to OTR, located in the Nungambakkam area of Chennai, is a popular bar and lounge known for its eclectic ambiance, expansive food and drink menu, and its role in the city’s bustling nightlife.[1] It was relaunched in January 2022 as OffTheRecord by The Thief after undergoing a major transformation, including a revamp of its interiors, a new menu, and new ownership.[2] Since 2023, it has been rebranded as OffTheRecord, after spinning out its nearby 'The Thief' bar.[3]

History
[edit]OffTheRecord originally operated under a different name but was relaunched by M Lakshmana Perumal, who also owned The Thief. After a period of closure, OffTheRecord reopened in 2022 with a redesigned space and a fresh look. The relaunch introduced a vibrant two-floor layout spread across 10,500 sq. ft., featuring zany artwork, including neon pop culture designs, abstract art, and a Roman-inspired al fresco dining area.[4]
Atmosphere and Design
[edit]The new interiors are a mix of quirky and artistic, designed to make a strong impression with their unique vibe. The walls are adorned with artwork that spans from abstract to pop culture, featuring iconic figures such as the Joker, and Kanye West. The rooftop area has been reimagined as a "Roman courtyard" with tropical floral themes and a centerpiece sculpture of the Discobolus (discus thrower). Since 2023, the rooftop is branded as Gaia, while previously it was branded as OTR courtyard. This eclectic mix of styles creates a lively and inviting atmosphere for patrons.
Menu
[edit]The menu at OffTheRecord covers a wide range of cuisines, reflecting a fusion of flavors from around the world. The culinary offerings include Pan Asian, Continental, North and South Indian, and Mexican dishes. According to the restaurant’s chef, Sai Deepak, the South Indian and Asian dishes have quickly become crowd favorites since the relaunch. The bar features a wide array of cocktails and mocktails, including the popular Peach Mocktail, noted for its delicate balance of banana crush and pineapple juice.
