Omolola Ijeoma Ogunyemi is a writer and biomedical informatician. She is Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics and a Professor in the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles, as well as an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Ogunyemi was born and raised in Ibadan, Nigeria.[2] After moving to the United States, she completed an undergraduate degree in computer science at Barnard College and a Master of Science in Engineering and Ph.D. in Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania.[3]

Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions[edit]

Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions is a collection of linked short stories published in 2022 by Amistad, an imprint of HarperCollins, USA[4]and in 2023 by Trapeze, an imprint of the Orion Publishing Group, UK. The book follows the lives of four Nigerian girls into adulthood through interlocking stories that begin in 1897 and end in 2050. Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions was well received by reviewers, with a starred review from Booklist,[5] which said "Ogunyemi's writing has the power to reverberate through generations. She captures the spirit of Nigeria and gives voice to the complicated mix of disappointment, fierce loyalty, and adoration Nigerians have for their country." Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions also received favorable reviews from The New York Times Book Review[6] Kirkus Reviews[7] and Publishers Weekly.[8] The New York Times named it an Editors' Choice for the week of October 20, 2022, with reviewer Tariro Mzezewa saying, "Each of the 10 chapters that make up this novel can stand on its own, but together they tell a beautiful story of sisterhood, family and love."[9]

Personal Life[edit]

Ogunyemi is the daughter of Nigerian academic, literary critic, and writer Chikwenye Okonjo Ogunyemi.
