Om Prakash Mohanty started learning music at the tender age of 10 from Guru Nabin Kishore Patnaik. He then started learning Indian classical music from the great Classical Guru Pt. Khitish Chandra Moitra. As a child he cracked the music audition in All India Radio at the age of 12. Started performing on stage with Prafulla Kar as a singer, as time passed he got inclined towards western music, started playing Spanish Guitar and joined the band wagon of Legendary Music composer singer Akshay Mohanty and assisted him in several films.

In 1988 he joined All India Radio Sambalpur as a staff music composer, during eight years of stay at Sambalpur he learnt the intricacies of Sambalpuri folk music and composed many songs in Sambalpuri dialect.

He got transferred to A.I.R Cuttack in the year 1994. During the period of service in A I.R. Cuttack he composed songs for all the veteran singers like Pranab kishore Patnaik, Akshay Mohanty, Sikander Alam, Atish Kumar Majumdar, Shyamamani Devi and many more. Participated in many completions organised by All India Radio and grabbed innumorable awards in National level Received award from the then Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for the feature PRATHAMA PARICHAYA NIRANTARA PARICHAYA. His debut film Bhagya Chakra got the state award as a best Music Director. Omprakash Mohanty experimented with many untouched areas of Odia literatures like Tantrik Buddhism and yogini cult of Odisha.
