Ottone Bacaredda was born20 December 1848 to a family of wealthy merchants. He was elected as Mayor of Cagliari n the elections of 1889. In 1899, after King Umberto I had laid the foundation stone of the new Cagliari City Hall, Bacaredda stood down as Mayor and was elected to the Parliament (1900-1904). He resigned after three years in the position[1].

In 1905 he was again Mayor of Cagliari, and the following year he had to confront a riot by his political opponents over the exorbitant cost of living, causing numerous casualties and significant material damage. After another resignition he was returned to office between 1911 and 1917[2]. He died in Via San Giovanni, on 26 December 1921, after having dedicated his life to a city ‘which still today remembers his long, fruitful work, and considers him not as a mayor – albeit of great longevity, with 32 years of service – but as the Mayor’ by popular definition[3].
