Paroma Soni (born June 1995) is an Indian data journalist, writer and videographer. She is currently a data and graphics reporter at Politico.[1] Soni was was previously an associate visual journalist at FiveThirtyEight[2] and a video producer for BuzzFeed India.[3] Soni has also contributed articles and videos to many publications internationally including Slate,[4] The Markup,[5] Scroll.in,[6] The Wire,[7] and Columbia Journalism Review.[8]

Personal life[edit]

Born in Mumbai, Soni currently lives in New York. She studied data journalism at Columbia University[9] and human rights studies at Trinity College.[10] She was also a graduate of the Mahindra United World College of India.[10]

Career[edit]

Soni began her career on the video team at Slate magazine in Brooklyn. She then worked as a freelance journalist in Mumbai for a variety of publications covering gender, film, culture, politics and climate. As a video editor and producer for BuzzFeed India, Soni appeared in several videos across the site's social platforms, and produced over 200 videos.[11]

In 2020, she moved to New York. In the United States, she has worked as a reporter and data journalist for Columbia Journalism Review, where two of her articles were finalists for the SAJA awards.[12][13] Soni then worked at FiveThirtyEight, where she produced interactive graphics for stories on elections, abortion and sports. In 2023, she contributed to The Markup's investigation on internet speed disparity titled "Still Loading", which won several awards, including the IRE Philip Myer Journalism Award, the Sigma Award,[14] two Society of News Design awards,[15] the ONA Award in Technology Reporting and four SABEW awards for Excellence in Business Journalism.[16]

At Politico, Soni covers trade, agriculture and American public policy. She presented four panels at the 2024 NICAR conference.[17]
