Paul Veneto is a retired former flight attendant from Milton, Massachusetts.[1] Through his nonprofit organization,[2] Veneto seeks to raise awareness to the heroism of flight crews during the September 11 attacks in 2001. Veneto refers to the flight crews of American Airlines Flight 11, American Airlines Flight 77, United Airlines Flight 93, and United Airlines Flight 175 as the "first, first responders" of the events of that day.[3] His stated goal is to "To remember, promote awareness of, and educate the public about the sacrifices and losses of the flight crews on September 11, 2001".[4]
"Paulie's Push"
[edit]In 2021, to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the terror attacks, Veneto pushed an airline service trolley while walking nearly 220 miles from Logan International Airport in Boston to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at "Ground Zero".[5] His intent was to honor the crew of United Airlines Flight 175, many of which were his co-workers whom he knew personally.[6] During that year's journey, which was covered by local and national media, Veneto walked for three weeks through various weather conditions including the remnants of Hurricane Henri and Hurricane Ida. Through Veneto's website and social media channels, members of the public were able to track his journey on an interactive map, as well as make donations to his cause.[7]
In 2022, inspired by the public support he received the previous year, Veneto decided to undertake another commemorative journey, wishing to honor the crew of American Airlines Flight 77. He remarked: "It was unbelievable... there were whole towns, fire trucks, everyone waiting for me. It was crazy."[8] Veneto's trek that year saw him walk from Dulles International Airport to The Pentagon over the course of four days. Later that year, he was honored by travel website The Points Guy with their "Hero In Travel" award.[9]
In 2023, to honor the crew of United Airlines Flight 93, Veneto walked with his beverage cart nearly 300 miles from Newark Liberty International Airport to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. As this was a much more difficult journey through the Allegheny Mountains, his route was created with assistance from the race director of the Boston Marathon and he was supported with a recreational vehicle that was donated by an anonymous benefactor.[6]
In 2024, Veneto left Logan Airport on August 18th, travelling once again to New York City and Ground Zero in order to honor the crew of American Airlines Flight 11.[10] In his "final push", Paul began his journey with a comemmorative sendoff and was escorted on the first leg of his route by the Boston Police Department. Earlier that year, Veneto was presented with the Gold President's Volunteer Service Award.[11]
Personal Life
[edit]Paul Veneto, known as "Paulie", was 65 years old at the time of his 2024 journey. Veneto, now retired, worked for decades as a flight attendant for United Airlines, World Airways, Leisure Air, AVAtlantic, and American Transair. He is one of 9 siblings and currently resides in Milton, Massachusetts.
