Malaysia has maintained permanent representation at the United Nations (UN) since its admission in 1957. Over the years, its representatives[1] have played a significant role in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development, contributing to various UN initiatives and advocating for issues relevant to Malaysia and the wider international community.

Malaysia has participated in over 38 peacekeeping operations since 1960, deploying approximately 40 thousand peacekeepers from the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and the two Royal Malaysian Police (RMP). In 2023[2], total of the deployment are 859 military and police personnel serving in various capacities in six UN peacekeeping missions.

Recent Developments and Current Priorities

In August 2019, Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin who assumed the role of Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the UN has emphasized the importance of multilateralism for Malaysia, stating that "the multilateral system is important to us, as any change can impact us."[9]

  • Peacekeeping contributions: Malaysia has a long history of contributing to UN peacekeeping missions, with over 31,000 troops deployed since independence. Currently, a significant contingent, including female peacekeepers, serves in Lebanon.[9]
  • Global issues: Malaysia actively engages with the UN on various global issues. Recently, Ambassador Hasrin reiterated Malaysia's support for a two-state solution for the Palestine issue and expressed concern regarding the Rohingya displacement.[9]
  • Sustainable development: Malaysia's national development goals align with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda. The country has made significant progress in poverty reduction and aims to ensure equitable prosperity for all Malaysians.[9]
