History

[edit]

1961-1981

[edit]

Pertemps was established in 1961 by Constance Watts with an initial loan of £500.[8] The first office was located on Temple Street in Birmingham, and the company generated a turnover of £50,000 in its first year.[9]

Tim Watts, Constance’s son, joined the company in 1971, following the opening of a branch in Wolverhampton in 1970.[9]

1982-2010

[edit]

In 1982, Tim Watts took over the leadership of Pertemps from his mother and currently holds the title of Lifetime President.[10] Under his leadership, the company established an Employee Benefit Trust in 1994, which allowed employees to own shares in the company.[9]

2012 merger

[edit]

In 2012, Pertemps merged with Network Group, resulting in the formation of what is considered the largest privately owned recruitment agency in the UK.[11]

2013-present

[edit]

Pertemps marked its 60th anniversary in 2021. That year, Tim Watts stepped back from daily operations, and Steve West was appointed Group Chief Executive Officer, with Carmen Watson becoming Chair of the Group.[12]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Pertemps secured a contract to employ staff at testing sites across the UK.[13]

Sponsorship

[edit]

Horse Racing

[edit]

Pertemps has been involved in sponsorship within the horse racing industry, notably sponsoring the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle at The Cheltenham Festival since 2002.[14] In 2023, the company became the sponsor of the Group 1 July Cup.[15]

Dragon Boat Race

[edit]

Pertemps has participated in the Birmingham Children's Hospital’s Dragon Boat race since 2022. In 2023, the company joined the BCH Changemakers, a group of companies committed to raising £1 million annually for the hospital.[16][17]

Blind Dave

[edit]

Pertemps has sponsored various challenges undertaken by Dave Heeley, also known as Blind Dave. This includes support for his 2017 Great Run Series challenge and his 800-mile "Escape from Colditz" ride.[18][19][20]
