Born in Derbyshire in 1979, Pete Shuttleworth's career in football, as a player, manager, scout, performance analyst and coach, spans more than 30 years, beginning when he was signed to Nottingham Forest FC Academy, under manager BrianClough, playing for the U11 – 16 teams.

Early Career

[edit]
Teacher, Triathlete, Football Manager
[edit]

Following Shuttleworth's appointment as a coach at Birmingham City in 2023, in an interview published in 2023 by Birmingham Live [1], Pete detailed his journey into football management.

Between 1998 - 2001, Shuttleworth was a Physical Education and Sports Science undergraduate at Loughborough University. In an interview with The Argyll Podcast, [2] he described how this was when he was introduced to football coaching.

Qualifying as a secondary school teacher in 2002, Shuttleworth joined Tupton Hall School as a PE teacher. In this position he managed and coached the school's U16s football team. [3] Under his management the U16s achieved success in the 2003 - 2004 season, reaching the quarter finals of the ESFA National League . The team included league players Lloyd Kerry, Nicky Law and Josh Law.

Shuttleworth was appointed to non-league Shirebrook Town FC where he set up a third team for the club in 2005, comprising players from Tupton Hall's U16s as a feeder team into Shirebrook's first and second teams. After one season, he joined the 1st team as assistant manager before being appointed as caretaker manager of the club in 2007 ahead of being given the job on a permanent basis in March 2008 [4]. He combined his football manager role with working full time as a teacher.

Following Shirebrook, Shuttleworth went on to become the assistant manager at Sheffield FC, the world's oldest football club after which he moved as Assistant Manager to Worksop Town FC for the 2013/14 season. Following this season, Shuttleworth left football management to concentrate on his teaching career.

Triathlon Career

[edit]
Becoming a Team GB Triathlete
[edit]

In 2009 Shuttleworth began competing in Triathlon competitions, joining Belper TenTwenty Triathlon Club. His knowledge of sports science combined with his aptitude for the three disciplines, enabled him to earn a Team GB place for the 2012 World Championships in Auckland. He went on to represent GB in two World Championships and three European Championships.[5]

Achieving increasing success in Triathlon, alongside being the assistant manager of first Shirebrook Town and then Worksop Town, Shuttleworth left football management in 2014 [6] to focus on Triathlon training.

He achieved a second Team GB place going on to compete in the 2015 European Triathlon Championships in Geneva, where he achieved a new personal best and was ranked 6th for his age group in Europe[7]

Professional Football Management Career

[edit]
Making the move to full-time football management
[edit]

In 2015 Shuttleworth re-entered football as a part-time scout for Birmingham City, then under the management of Harry Redknapp. He remained in the part-time scout role for two years before Birmingham's then new Director of Football (Jeff Vetere) approached him to head up the club's Analysis Department full time. Shuttleworth subsequently left teaching in 2017 after 16 years as a frontline teacher and latterly a member of the school's senior leadership team as Head of ITT Training.

He remained at Birmingham City for three seasons, under managers Harry Redknapp, Lee Carsley, Steve Cotterill, Garry Monk, and Aitor Karanka in roles including opposition analyst, in-game analyst and coach.

Shuttleworth then left the club to become the first team analyst at Derby County, initially working under former manager Phillip Cocu. It was at Derby County that Shuttleworth was first introduced to the former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney. Rooney initially joined Derby County as interim player manager manager during Shuttleworth's first season in 2020, taking over from Cocu.

The former England and Manchester United star Rooney was subsequently appointed as the full-time Manager of Derby County in January 2021 following a successful stint as Interim Player-Manager where he navigated the club from the bottom of the English Championship table to safety, avoiding relegation by three points. Rooney increased Shuttleworth's responsibilities[8]

In June 2022 Rooney resigned as Manager of Derby County[9]. The following month, Rooney was appointed as Head Coach at DC United. In August Rooney brought Shuttleworth on board as Assistant Coach at DC United [10].

Speaking to Derbyshire Live of his decision to bring Shuttleworth to DC United, Rooney said: "Pete worked with me at Derby during my time as manager there and has experience with analysis, coaching and recruitment. He's someone I trust very much and he has a lot of qualities to help make the team better. It's good to have him come in with me, but it's also good for the team and the club to get someone of Pete's ability to help us improve moving forward."[11]

Shuttleworth then accompanied Rooney to Birmingham City FC when he was appointed as manager in 2023 [12]. Following Birmingham's 3-0 defeat at Leeds on New Year's day, Rooney was sacked [13]. Shuttleworth stayed on at Birmingham for the remainder of the season, working under Tony Mowbray.

In May 2024, Rooney was appointed Head Coach of English second-tier Championship side Plymouth Argyle FC. Shortly after his appointment, Shuttleworth was named as Argyle's new Assistant Head Coach[14]. Announcing him as Argyle's new Assistant Head Coach, Rooney said of Shuttleworth: "He is an excellent coach with footballing ideals that match mine and Argyle's but is also an outstanding motivator and has a real knowledge of tactical and performance analysis. Ultimately, he is a great person who holds all the values that the football club and I look for and he will complement our current group of coaching staff perfectly."[15]

Alongside his Plymouth Argyle role [16], in 2024 Shuttleworth was appointed by the Republic of Ireland's national football team's Interim Head Coach John O'Shea's backroom staff for international friendlies against Hungary (4 June) and Portugal (11 June)[17].

Shuttleworth is currently part of the Republic of Ireland's coaching staff for its UEFA Nations League campaign which commenced on the 7 September 2024, with games against England [18], Greece [19] and Finland [20] .

It was a role welcomed by Rooney, who told BBC Sport BBC Sport "The more experience your coaches can get will only make them a better coach." [21]
