  • Comment: A charitable person, however the biographical details about him is quite sparse. Most of the sources only give small doses of coverage to Coyl, and repeats the same info. Interviews are not independent sources. The two best sources here in my opinion is this and this, but they pretty much says the same thing: he was promoted into a director, and some basic biographical details. Peter Coyl is an American librarian. He served as President of the Freedom to Read Foundation from 2022-23[1]and is currently the Library Director & CEO of the Sacramento Public Library.[2]

Education[edit]

Coyl earned a Masters in Library and Information Science from Drexel University and a Bachelors in Public Administration and Public Policy from Oakland University.[3]

Early Life[edit]

Coyl grew up in the Arden-Arcade area of Sacramento and received his first library card from the Arcade Library.[4]

Career[edit]

Coyl began his library career in high school at the Rochester Hills Public Library shelving children's books and later driving their Bookmobile. He was a Librarian at an International School in Taiwan[4] and later worked at the Dallas Public Library before becoming Director of the Montclair Public Library. [5]

Coyl served on the Stonewall Book Award Committee in 2013[6] and was its Chair in 2014.[7]

Coyl served as Director of the Montclair Public library from 2017 to 2021[8]. Coyl was hailed as a "visionary leader...with managerial savvy and keen familiarity with the state of the art" by a former member of the Board of Trustees.[9]. He was announced as the next Director of the Sacramento Public Library on December 10, 2021.[10].

As President of the Freedom to Read Foundation, Coyl accepted the Innovator Award on behalf of the Foundation at the LA Times Festival of Books[11] and appeared on a panel with authors Angie Thomas and George Johnson.[12]
