Peter Hoppe (27 November 1938[1] – 3 March 2010)[2][3][4] was one of the important German painters after 1945 in Germany.[5]

His work included canvas painting, panel painting[1], mural painting[1] also sculpture[6], printmaker and theatre designer[7][3][1]. He studied at Fine and Applied Arts Academy at Berlin-Weissensee with the professors Ernst Rudolf Vogenauer, Fritz Dähn, Arno Mohr and Walter Womacka. [8][3][9]

Mythology[edit]

Many series of the painter devoted to the greek mythology, [10] like Nike[11], Icarus[8], Orpheus[9], Danaë[9], Dionysus & Bacchus, [12][9] Pan[9] and the Judgment of Paris[13] with over 200 large formats of drawings, lithographs, etchings and painted ceramic plates.[8] Later he extended his work themes with the motive of Cassandra.[14]

With the oil painting Pietà (2001)[15], Hoppe painted a significant Christian art motif known as the Pietà, depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the lifeless body of Jesus Christ after it was taken down from the cross.

Mural Painting[edit]

Hoppes finished his first practice painting ("Polytechnik"), during his thesis 1967. The most extensive work "Premnitzer Bilder" was done at the industrial building of the Chemiefaserwerk Premnitz, 1973. The drawing included four walls. 1974 the artist used industrial enamel for the external wall of the sports center in Berlin. [1] The same material he used later for different outdoor murals.

While most of these work is not existing anymore, two recent paintings are still accessible: Morning - Day - Evening - Dream, Freizeitforum Marzahn, Berlin.[16] In the summer of 1993, the artist completed his final mural in a church located in Brandenburg, Germany. This artwork, executed as a secco painting on lime plaster, encompasses an area of approximately 25 square meters.[17]

Still Life[edit]

The artist created a series of still life works, like "Flowers" (12 paintings) (2005), which focuses on the depiction of various floral arrangements.

The "Lobsters" series (also known as "Hummerbilder") began in 1979 at Hoppe's countryside studio, where the artist found inspiration in small crabs from the Parchsteiner See, which later evolved into the primary subjects of his lobster-themed paintings and drawings on canvas and paper.

Landscape painting[edit]

Starting in 1971, Hoppe began to paint scenes of Berlin. With „Dimitroff - Ecke Schönhauser“, „S-Bahnhof Prenzlauer Alle“ and „Helmholtzplatz“ he started realistic paintings in his earlier days. With „Hallenser Stadtlandschaft“ he painted the modern architecture of the GDR. [1]

Consecutive study travels to Macedonia (1975), Vietnam(), Cuba (1984), France (1991) and Germany (1993). The works created here differ significantly from the previously produced pieces. In a more expansive style of presentation and the change to mainly paper drawings (Gouache). „Many things were left behind, and he focused only on what was essential to him.“ [1]

Rewards[edit]

At the III. Trienale of realistic painting (1979) Hoppe received one of the main prices for his works: „Landschaft mit Fasan”, „Der Grafiker Herbert Sandberg" and „Selbstbildnis vor verhangener Staffelei". [19]
