Phantosmia is an upcoming 2024 Philippine drama film written, edited, and directed by Lav Diaz.[2] It stars Ronnie Lazaro, Janine Gutierrez, and Hazel Orencio. The film is to be premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival out of competition, his 8th film for the festival.[3]

Synopsis

Hilarion Zabala (Ronnie Lazaro) is afflicted by a possible case of phantosmia, possibly caused by a deep trauma. A radical solution was proposed to cure the ailment: Zabala must face against his dark past in the military. At the same time, he must also confront his present situation after being reassigned in the remote Pulo Penal Colony.

Production

The film was shot in Sampaloc, Quezon.[3] In an interview with Rappler, Diaz obtained the idea for the film from learning about phantosmia through his exposure with soldiers suffering from PTSD at Victoriano Luna General Hospital.[2] The film was produced by Sine Olivia Pilipinas, Lav's production arm, and TEN17P.[4]
