Pomegranate is an opera with music by composer Kye Marshall and libretto by Amanda Hale.

The opera is a lesbian love story which centres two women, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii, and the bathhouse raids in Toronto (Operation Soap).

Performance history[edit]

Pomegranate originated as a song cycle on a series of poems by Hale entitled Pomegranate, a tale of remembering (2007) set by Marshall. The original songs were premiered in March 2014 at Toronto's Heliconian Club in Yorkville for International Women’s Day, honouring women composers.[1]

In 2016, the opera was workshopped by Tapestry Opera, with conductor Wayne Strongman and director Marjorie Chan. It was then revisited by the company the following season with director Michael Mori and conductor Evan Mitchell leading.

A 2019 self-produced production saw five performances in collaboration with Pride Toronto and Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Jennifer Tung conducted with direction by Michael Mori.[2]

The Canadian Opera Company collaborated on developmental workshops of Pomegranate in both 2021 and 2022, seeing the addition of a six-singer chorus and revised musical material. The work premiered as a full production at the Canadian Opera Company's Studio Theatre in June 2023 as a co-production with Vancouver Opera.[3] The production was an official Pride Toronto event.[4][5]
