PumpHouse Blues[edit]

PumpHouse Blues is an American music group originating out of Richmond, VA, United States. Originally formed in 2012 as a Blues side project by members of the Lance Manley Band, the group has evolved to incorporate a variety of music genres including Rock, R&B, and more, offering their own take on the traditional Blues style.

History[edit]

In 2008, several of Lance Manley Band members began a new side project. By 2012, PumpHouse Blues was formed with the three founding members being Pete Daniel (bass), Wayne Chaplin (guitar/harmonica) and Wayne Prior (drums). Over the years, the band has grown from a three-piece unit to a seven-piece ensemble.

Early Days and Rise to Recognition[edit]

Early gigs around the Richmond area at venues like The Diamond, Richmond City Stadium, Capital Ale House Music Hall, Louisiana Blues & Cultural Festival in Petersburg, Virginia[1], and Crossroads Coffee & Ice Cream[2] established their connection with the local music scene. Their 2018 debut album, "PUMPED," recorded at In Your Ear Studios, marked a turning point. Appearances on Virginia This Morning in 2019 and coverage in Richmond media like CBS 6 solidified their regional presence, "covering the game from R&B to Chicago jump and swing blues."[3]

From Local Gigs to Music Festivals[edit]

PumpHouse Blues' reputation extended beyond Richmond, leading to private events such as the Jimmy Hendrix Estate and performances at major music festivals like FloydFest 19 Voyage Home[4] in 2019.

In 2020, they opened for Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule at Chesterfield After Hours. [5] In 2021, they shared the stage with blues legend Ron Holloway at Pop's Farm (Rooster Walk), honoring their late Saxophonist Dr. Jimmy Jordan. PumpHouse joined together again with special guest Ron Holloway at Rooster Walk 12 Music Festival in 2022[6], whose lineup included major acts like Little Feat, Grace Potter, and others. Later that summer, the band traveled back to Floyd, VA for Floydfest 22, Heartbeat, marking their second performance at the popular festival in the Blue Ridge Mountains joining a stacked lineup consisting of Marcus King, Melissa Etheridge, and Leftover Salmon amongst others.

In November of 2022, PumpHouse opened for Fighting Gravity at the historic Richmond theatre, The National. A third appearance on Virginia This Morning in 2023 marked the release of their latest album, "I Gotta Go," recorded again at In Your Ear Studios in Richmond, Virginia. Other notable local appearances include The Tin Pan, St. Elizabeth Jazz and Food Festival, and Powhatan Music Festival, solidifying their presence in the Virginia music scene.

Music Style and Influence[edit]

The band’s style and direction continue to be heavily influenced by the blues but now is characterized by its fusion of traditional Blues with elements of R&B, Rock & Roll, and more. Davey Jones from River City Magazine wrote, "This is Family. Blues music is deeply rooted in the past, but its present and future are as wide open as the imagination of those who love it.".[1]

The band's current lineup includes Pete Daniel on bass guitar (Last Judgement, Psychedlic Hippos, Lance Manley), Chris Leitch on trombone, keyboard, vocals (Boy Oh Boy, Fighting Gravity, 808 Band), Lutha Lucas on lead vocals (Church of What's Happenin Now), Wayne Chaplin on guitar, harmonica (Cosmic Cowboys, Vista Cruisers, Lance Manley), Eddie Lohr on guitar, vocals (Eddie Lohr Band), Wayne Pryor on drums (Marvin Taylor Experience, Lance Manley Band), Tony Martin on percussion, drums (Lost and Found Band, Expressions of Worship, Hoosier Daddy).
