Purple Cow is an American ice cream brand, established by Fred Meijer in Greenville, Michigan, in 1934.[1] Purple Cow ice cream is sold exclusively at owner Meijer's stores.

History[edit]

Purple Cow's founder Fred Meijer worked with his father, Hendrik Meijer, to open Meijer's North Side Grocery in Greenville, Michigan in 1934. [2] The Fred and Hendrik opened up Meijer's Thrifty Acres launching Meijer's modern layout in 1962. Fred took over the company after his father's death in 1964.

During the 1960s, Meijer's Thrifty Acres featured an ice cream counter. Fred named the ice cream brand after a poem he shared with his three sons: Gelett Burgess's Purple Cow.[3]

In 2012, Meijer purchased Bareman's Dairy in Holland, Michigan entering the dairy industry. Meijer invested over $8 Million to expand the dairy plant to produce milk and chocolate milk for Meijer's stores in Michigan.[4] Meijer renamed the dairy plant Purple Cow Creamery. Meijer has since created Purple Cow ice cream from the Purple Cow Creamery.[5]

in 2014, ground was broken for a second Purple Cow Creamery in Tipp City, Ohio.[6] The factory would create milk, cottage cheese, and yogurt for Meijer's 100 stores in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.

Products[edit]

Purple Cow has more than 40 flavors of ice cream.[7]

Purple Cow also sells ice cream novelties, sorbet and frozen yogurt.[8]
