Presentation

Ramo de Rosas is a craft mezcal brand belonging to Licores Artesanales Zua SA de CV[1] , whose production is located in the villages of Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca (Mexico) and San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca (Mexico).[2]

It falls under the "Mezcal Artesanal" denomination and produces 4 types of mezcal :

1) espadín joven (8 years of maturation)

2) espadín capón (8 years + 1 year of "capón": the agave is left in the soil an additional year after the stem is cut)

3) tobalá capón (11 years + 1 year of "capón")

4) cuixe (16 years of maturation)[3]

Origin of the name

The name "Ramo de Rosas" comes from a tradition dating back to 1950, whereby a bouquet of roses ("ramo de rosas" in Spanish) is thrown into the fire pit that cooks the agaves, in honor to the Virgin of the Rosary, the patron saint of Santiago Matatlán.[4]

Distinctions[edit]

Ramo de Rosas was awarded Gran Oro (ie N°1) at the 2023 Brussels International Contest (Concurso Mundial de Bruselas) in the Espadín category.[5] [6]
