Roy's Peak acrylic adaption, depicted by prominent New Zealand artist, He Rūpahu Tenei is one of the most notable landscape depictions of Wanaka, New Zealand.
He Rūpahu Tenei, born in Levin, New Zealand in 1903 first gravitated towards painting during World War 1 when he was granted medical dispensation from the New Zealand Army due to a hereditary foot disability.
Tenei, in awe of the majestic alpine climate of Wanaka, New Zealand, in particular, Roy's Peak, produced his acrylic depiction of the summit in 1942.
Description
[edit]The artwork portrays Roy's Peak, a challenging alpine climb rising 1,578 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding Southern Alps.
The infamous climb and the views the summit offers is a popular destination for trail enthusiasts and hold international notoriety.
Tenei's use of bright blue and yellow acrylics illustrate the natural, rugged beauty of the Central Otago peak.

[edit]Born in Levin, New Zealand in 1903, Tenei became a prominent figure in the art world in the early 1940's with his array of acrylic depictions of New Zealand landscapes, most notably his depiction of Roy's Peak.
Legacy
[edit]Tenei's depiction of Roy's peak stands as a testament to his ability to encapsulate the majestic beauty of New Zealand's natural landscapes.
The original canvas was sold to a private buyer in 1963 and is believed to be in the possession of the original buyer's family, occasionally being lent to notable Museums such as Te Papa.
