Shikder Abir Mahmud Jahan, widely known by his news byline SAM Jahan is an award-winning Bangladeshi journalist, press trainer and press rights activist.[1]

Biography

Jahan was born in Gopalganj and studied journalism at University of Bedfordshire in the United Kingdom.

Career

Jahan worked with The Daily Star newspaper as a Multimedia Journalist before joining Agence France-Presse as a correspondent in 2015.

He also freelanced for CNN,[2] TRT World,[3] Voice of America[4] , South China Morning Post[5] at different period before joining Reuters TV in 2023.

He is a Fellow of the UK's Foreign Office's Chevening programme at University of Westminster.[6] Jahan is also an Alumni of the Embassy of the United States, Dhaka.[7]

Awards

Jahan received the Hong Kong Human Rights Press Awards three times. The first time he co-received the honorable mention award with Dhaka Agence France-Presse bureau chief Shafiqul Alam in 2017 for their story on Rohingya refugees' woes.[8]

He won the second one in 2018 while covering the Rohingya refugee crisis at Bangladesh-Myanmar border.[9] The third one was awarded in 2021 after he co-wrote a long piece on Rohingya refugees' risky journey to Malaysia by rickety boats.[10]

In 2022, Jahan was co-awarded the Covering Climate Now award with an AFP visual journalists team for a climate change story on how Dhaka is lying on the verge of becoming Atlantis.[11]
