Draft:Saint Thoeger Holy Spring

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saint Thøger was born in Norway in the year 1000 in Thuringia. King Olaf II Haraldsson (995 – 29 July 1030), also known as Saint Olaf, Rex Perpetuus Norvegiæ (Latin for Norway's Eternal King), made him his chaplain. After the king died, he went to Denmark where he settled in Vestervig. Not far from the place in Thy where the church was located( https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestervig_Kirke) Saint Thøger came ashore He built a small church himself out of twigs and branches to honor God.

One evening, he went to bed feeling sorrowful, but when he rose in the morning, a spring had emerged where his head had lain because he could not find shelter. He took this as a good omen, and he built a church not far from the spring. (25 Thiele: Danish Folktales 2 II, 34.)

A holy spring is a spring whose water is considered to have healing properties. According to Danish folklore, the "power" of the water was at its peak on Walpurgis Night (30 April) and on Midsummer's Eve (23 June), which were the preferred times to visit. People particularly sought out holy springs for ailments such as arthritis, paralysis, wounds and sores, mange and scabies, as well as stomach and eye diseases.

The spring was originally located southwest of the church but was buried under the ruins of the Vestervig church. However, slightly further south, a natural spring emerges from the ground at coordinates 56°45'16.7"N 8°18'57.1"E. The small creek from this spring flows northward, and many believe that this is the same water that once flowed from the holy spring further north.

could this existing spring be the one also mentioned in the folk story? When the apostle of Thy, St. Thøger, traveled around preaching the word of God, he also came to the mentioned farm in Vestervig/randrup where he met a man standing in his stable door. As they talked, the man complained about his many misfortunes with his livestock, but then St. Thøger said, "Place a cross of Christ where it stands now, and things will surely get better." Immediately, a spring gushed forth at that spot—a holy spring where many sick people came for healing over a long period, and it retained its healing power.
