Sam Saimun (1924/1925 - 3 April 1972) is an Indonesian singer whose career peaked in the 1950s. Saimun started his career by winning radio singing contests held by Radio Republik Indonesia in the Keroncong category.

Biography

Saimun was born between the year 1924 or 1925.

During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia, he joined Orkes Studio Bandung as a singer, led by E. Sambajon.[1]

He won the Bintang Radio Republik Indonesia competition for the year 1951, 1952, dan 1955 at seriosa, entertainment, and keroncong.[2]

Sam Saimun is oftenly referred as the "Nat King Cole" of Indonesia.[3] His popularity has led him to be referred by other singers, such as Bing Slamet.[4]

Saimun was also popular in neigbouring countries; Malaysia and Singapore. In July of 1951, he visited Singapore together with Nick Mahamit quartet. He visited Malaysia in the year 1958 and 1968. His last show abroad was held in Malaysia on 27-28 October, 1970. He performed alongside one hundred and thirthy other musicians from Singapore and Taiwan.[1]

Sam Saimun died on the third day of April, 1972. He left a wife and three children.
