Valmiki[1], The writer of the great Ramayana[2] is highly worshipped in Amritsar[3] . There is a temple in the city of Amritsar which has a 2 feet tall silver Idol of the great Sage Valmiki.The temple was built in 2001. It is the second temple in Amritsar, which has a metallic Idol of Valmiki, after The Bhagwan Valmiki Tirath Sthal[4]. The name of the temple is MANDIR VALMIKI MILAP SABHA (REG.).It is situated in Godam Mohalla[5].

The Idol

Valmiki's Silver Idol

The idol was brought here on 20 September, 1954. It is made up of pure Silver[6]. The Idol of Maharishi Valmiki is posing like writing something. The idol is washed two times every year. One on Murti Sthapana Divas (Idol Installation Day) and Pargat Diwas[7]. On every Pargat Diwas the idol is taken out, washed and put in Palanquin, and the palanquin is put on a chariot and pulled by several devotees throughout the whole city. Firstly the Idol is washed with Tamarind[8] or Colgate Powder and Water; Then the Idol is washed with Panchamrita[9] which consist Milk, Curd, Sugar or Jaggery, Honey and Ghee. Every Murti Sthapana Diwas and Pargat Diwas, After washing the Idol the cloth of the Idol is changed. Daily Puja (Hinduism)[10] is performed by the temple servants. Every Sunday the Idol is cleaned by a wet cloth. Every year on Murti Sthapana Diwas a Kirtan[11]in the name of Valmiki is performed. Near the Idol you can see the Ramayana.

The Temple

The temple was built in 2001. On the left side of the main temple, You will see the temple of Jhulelal (Hinduism)[12]. You will see the stairs on the left side also. After climbing that stairs you will see a big hall. Beside the hall there is a gate. In the gate there are two rooms and a Small Hall. One room is empty and the other one has the clothes of the idol, a large pan in which the Idol is washed, Two big rods by which the chariot is pulled. In each room there are idols of different gods. The central room has the idol of Valmiki composing the Ramayana and Lava (Ramayana)[13], Kusha (Ramayana)[14] sitting on each side of Valmiki. In the left room there is the Idol of Hanuman[15] holding the Dunagiri (mountain)[16]. In the right room there is the Idol of Shiva[17] sitting and two snakes on each side of him. Outside the rooms and gates there are stairs. After climbing them there is a hall which is under construction. Upon that floor there is the rooftop. The rooftop has a small room and outside there are three flags with V (denoting Valmiki) on them.

Management

MANDIR VALMIKI MILAP SABHA (REG.) is managed and maintained by the Temple Servants who are ordinary people. The bearer of the Temple expenses is the Head of The Mohalla. The Puja Items are bought from the money which is offered by the devotees to the God. The Cleaning of the Whole Temple is done by The Temple Servants.
