Sophie Tal Men, born Sophie Ory in 1980, is a French novelist and neurologist. She is considered a popular French novelist of the beginning of the 21st century. Her scientific works concern notably those diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and the disturbances to the way that their perception and emotions function.

Biography[edit]

Family and education[edit]

Born in 1980.[1], she is the daughter of a physiotherapist and a countryside general practitioner[2]. Her grand-father ran a sanatorium. Her interest in the literary arts during her secondary studies at lycée Chateaubriand de Rennes orientated her towards literary preparatory classes but she was also interested in studying medicine. Following the recommendation of her father that medicine requires full commitment, she enrolled in the faculty of medicine at the Université de Rennes 1 and finishes the first year of her studies at the top of her class.

Married to a doctor, she is the mother of three children[3]. She is also the step-sister of Aurélie Valognes, who is also a novelist [4].

Medical Career[edit]

She followed the neurology path, considering it to be the specialty of medicine which was the most literary. She works both in neurology at the hospital of Scorff in Lorient, France, and as a clinical researcher at the Université Rennes-II where she publishes her works in the area of Parkinson's Disease in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences[5] and Journal of Neuropsychology[6]

Writing Career[edit]

Sophie Ory adopted the pseudonym Sophie Tal Men, and published her first novel on Amazon under this name using the auto-edition CreateSpace service in 2015. Her first novel is titled "Les yeux couleur de pluie", translating to "Eyes the colour of the rain", the editor of which is Albin Michel. This novel has sold more than 100 000 copies[7] and was placed on a best-selling novel list[8].

She has published a new novel each year since 2016.

She is considered to be an icon of popular novel literature in the "feel good" genre, alongside her step-sister Aurélie Valognes, as well as Agnès Martin-Lugand, Raphaëlle Giordano, Agnès Ledig and Virginie Grimaldi.[9][4]
