The Specialist Visual and Performing Arts (SVAPA) program is a three-year Department of Education endorsed specialist program located at Mount Lawley Senior High School in the Perth Metro area of Western Australia. It offers an arts education in drama, music, media, and visual art, led by specialist teachers, and emphasises interdisciplinary arts connections. [1]
Background
Established in 2001 by Dale Irving and Jane Packham, the program was created to meet the needs of creative individuals seeking an arts-focused education alongside like-minded peers. Currently coordinated by Moya Thomas, the program is funded by Mount Lawley Senior High School, the Parents and Citizens Committee, fundraising efforts, and program fees.[2]
SVAPA students have worked with local companies such as CO3 dance company, PVI Collective, The Last Great Hunt, SymbioticA, Perth Institute ofContemporary Art, and international companies Complicite, Punchdrunk, Frantic Assembly, Berliner Ensemble, Saatchi Gallery, and Tate Galleries. These opportunities span various disciplines, enriching the students' educational experience.
In 2020, the State Government announced that Mount Lawley Senior High School would expand into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) facilities at Edith Cowan University’s Mount Lawley campus. This transition will include the school incorporating the WA Academy of Performing Arts facilities. [3]
Educational Focus
SVAPA's multi-arts focus fosters an understanding of the interconnectedness of various art forms, promoting innovation and creativity. As the sole multi-arts specialist program in Western Australia, SVAPA equips students with diverse skills and a forward-thinking mindset. The program also emphasises industry relevance through ongoing partnerships and mentorships, prioritising idea development, interpersonal skills, and critical thinking.
Structure
Students study all mandated School Curriculum and Standard Authority (SCSA) subjects but offer a specialised curriculum in visual art, music, drama, and media starting in Year 7 and continuing through to Year 9. With multiple Period 0 classes in arts areas, including dance, and various enrichment and extension opportunities, students receive a comprehensive arts education. [4]
Extracurricular activities in the arts, such as exhibitions, performances, workshops, masterclasses, ensembles, festivals, concerts, camps, and international tours, provide students with avenues to embrace new challenges and achieve their goals through artistic pursuits. Past tours have included destinations such as London, Berlin, and Paris.
Admission Admission to SVAPA is merit-based, with 32 students selected in Year 6 to commence the program in Year 7. [5]
Alumni
SVAPA has a record of supporting students in post-secondary education and careers in technical theatre, performance, arts administration, visual art, graphics, music, film, and TV. Notable recent alumni include Alex Williams, Kevin Penkin, Dacre Montgomery, Asher Yasbinek, Shannon Berry, Grace Sanders, and Keir Wilkins, building on previous alumni such as David Helfgott, Marcus Graham, Tammy McIntosh, Katy Steele, Luke Steele, and Elizabeth Blackmore.
