Speed (Original Motion Picture Score) is the film score soundtrack composed by Mark Mancina to the 1994 film Speed. Released through 20th Century Fox Film Scores label on August 30, 1994, the album featured 40 minutes of Mancina's score; an expanded edition which also included previously unreleased material along with the newly remastered complete score was released by La-La Land Records on February 28, 2012.[1][2]

Reception

[edit]

Thomas Glorieux of Maintitles wrote "Speed is solid action music with several highlights and it generates a response, it delivers a pace and an energy."[3] Christian Clemmensen of Filmtracks wrote "the music for Speed is well written, with several effective motifs assembled around a decent primary anthem."[4] James Southall of Movie Wave wrote "once is enough for either of them, and sadly the other 65 minutes of the album are largely undistinguished and sometimes borderline repellent. Repetitive, unbelievably cheap (a gigantic orchestra is listed inside the album but you can never hear it over the tinny synths), it’s difficult to imagine that anyone could find anything of real value other than nostalgia in there."[5]

Jeff Ames of Comingsoon.net described it as an "incredible, rhythmic score" that immediately gravitates the audiences towards its "unique blend of orchestra and electronics".[6] Zaki Hasan of IGN wrote "Mancina’s thematic material melds orchestral and synth sensibilities for a sound that’s uniquely evocative of this film and the era that produced it. The central motif plays over the opening credits and establishes the movie’s identity while layering in the themes that will be utilized throughout to considerable propulsive effect."[7] Benjamin Lee of The Guardian called it as an "all-timer action score".[8]
