Susmita Bhattacharya is the Principal[1][2] of Jhargram Government Medical College in West Bengal since June 2023[3]. She is a Member of the State Level Expert Committee for AMR Containment constituted by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal since 2022[4] and retained her seat upon its reconstitution in 2023[5]. A Professor since 2013, she was the Head of the Department of Microbiology of College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital from June 2018 to June 2023[3] and served as a Member of the Medical Education Unit[6] and the In-Charge of the Central Research Unit at the same College[7]. She is noted for her research on surgical site infection and Staphylococcus aureus[8] and decontamination studies[9].

Educational Background

Susmita Bhattacharya obtained her M.B.B.S. and M.D. from the University of Calcutta in 1988 and 2003 respectively. She was awarded the Ph.D. in 2018 by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences[3].

Career

Susmita Bhattacharya registered with the West Bengal Medical Council in 1990 and joined the West Bengal Health Service in 1991 where she continued till 2000. Subsequently, she joined the West Bengal Medical Education Service as a Demonstrator in 2000. She was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2003, Associate Professor in 2009 and Professor in 2013. She served as the Head of the Department of Microbiology, College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital from 2018 to 2023 and acted as an Assessor of the Medical Council of India for undergraduate and postgraduate level inspections. She is a Life Member of the Indian Medical Association and the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists.

Susmita Bhattacharya has performed research and made academic publications on on surgical site infections[8], cultivation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis[10] and fingernail onychomycosis[11].
