From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Synthesis of Self is a New Zealand melodic hardcore band from Auckland, active since 2019. The band currently consists of vocalist Tyler Jamieson, drummer Alasdair Miller, guitarists Leaf Wright and Benji Perez, and bass player Connor McNab.[1] The band was formerly known as Stacked and is known for participating in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Smokefreerockquest from 2019 to 2021, becoming National Finalists twice and winning the Tāmaki Makaurau People’s Choice Award in 2021.[2][3]

History

[edit]

Synthesis of Self was formed in Auckland in 2019, then known as Stacked. Synthesis participated in Smokefreerockquest from 2019 - 2021 and in the DIG THE GIG tertiary band competition in 2023.[4]

Synthesis of Self has been active in the Auckland music scene since 2019, frequently featuring in underground shows in the Auckland all-ages youth punk, metal, hardcore and alternative music scene from 2019 until 2022.[3][5][6] Their involvement in the Auckland alternative music scene has included organising successful DIY shows and raves.[3][7] Synthesis has supported acts such as Written By Wolves, Coridian, Xile, Crooked Royals, Bleeders and Pull Down The Sun on their local and nationwide tours.[3][8] Synthesis has had an impact on younger bands in the heavy music scene, with bands such as Carthage citing Synthesis of Self as a band that has "spearheaded a new era of all-ages live music".[9] Synthesis references Counterparts (band), Bloom, Belmont (band), Being as an Ocean, Invent Animate, and Silent Planet as influences.[10]

Albums

[edit]

Synthesis of Self released their debut single "Remain" in 2021, and their single "Atlas" in 2022, both featuring on their debut EP Crushed by the Sky released in 2022. The songs "Child", "Shelter", "Remain" and "Truthless Lips" from Crushed by the Sky won APRA lyric awards through Smokefree Rockquest.[11] In 2024 Synthesis released the singles "Decadence", "Every Word You'll Never Speak", and "Red and Blue", which feature on their second EP The Blade Embedded.
