Tabish Khan is an art critic, writer, and speaker[1] who writes primarily about art exhibitions in London, UK. He is the art critic for Londonist,[2] regularly reviews exhibitions for Culture Whisper,[3] and writes for FAD magazine.[4] He is a trustee of the City and Guilds of London Art School,[5] The Discerning Eye[6] - which hosts an annual exhibition,[7] and artist collective ArtCan.[8] He is also a critical friend of UP projects[9] - a public art organisation specialising in socially engaged public art commissioning.

Career[edit]

He has been writing for Londonist since 2012.[10] He has written previews of the exhibitions for the year[11] and month ahead,[12] roundups of exhibition reviews,[13][14] and individual reviews of museum and gallery exhibitions - including 'In Plain Sight' at the Wellcome Collection,[15] 'Hieroglyphs' at The British Museum,[16] and Raphael at The National Gallery.[17]

He has conducted interviews for Londonist, including with artist Sara Shakeel[18] and actor Imogen Poots.[19] He has also reviewed restaurants[20] and the performing arts[21] for Londonist.

For Culture Whisper, Khan has reviewed London exhibitions including Mat Collishaw ('Petrichor' at Kew Gardens),[22] Marina Abramovic at the Royal Academy of Arts,[23] London, and Thomas J Price at the Victoria and Albert Museum[24], London.

Khan writes a weekly top 5 for FAD magazine,[25] he has an occasional column on ‘What’s Wrong With Art’,[26] reviews exhibitions including John Craxton at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester,[27] and Deep Horizons at MIMA, Middlesbrough.[28] He has also written features on artists, including an interview with David Wightman,[29] and has selected his top art books to read.[30]

He has also written for other publications including his top exhibitions of 2023[31] and an interview with artist Liorah Tchiprout for Stir World.[32]

Khan has appeared on television to discuss the Turner Prize on Al-Jazeera,[33] on euronews to discuss a Vincent Van Gogh exhibition at The Courtauld[34] and the Faberge exhibition at The V&A Museum,[35] and on TRT World to discuss the top news stories of the year.[36]

He has appeared on BBC Radio London to discuss the exhibitions coming up in the year ahead[37] and on multiple podcasts including 'All About Art' with Alexander Steinacker-Clark,[38] Ministry of Arts,[39] the Delphian Podcast,[40] and The Curator’s Salon with Gita Joshi to discuss art and his career.[41]

Khan has presented, chaired, and been part of several discussions on art and in conversations with artists.[42] Those that have been recorded include an artist interview with Joe Grieve for BWG gallery,[43] a writing about art workshop for the Association of Art History,[44] and a panel discussion entitled "What’s Wrong With Art" for the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize.[45]

He graduated in Biomedical Science from King’s College London[46] and came to art later in life. Based on his non-art background, he has been given the nickname ‘The People’s Art Critic’.[47][48] In a blog post for Artsted, he stated “I believe passionately in making art accessible to everyone”.[49] In an interview in 2021 Rachel Segal Hamilton, writing for the University of the Arts London, stated: “Tabish Khan is on a mission to demystify the art world for his readers”.[50]

Khan has also judged numerous art prizes[51] including the Jackson’s Painting Prize in 2021,[52] the Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture in 2021, 2022, and 2023,[53] and the Studio West ‘Now Introducing’ open call and art prize in 2021.[54]
