Tara Jam (born 9 April, 1998) is a Canadian[1] singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. She gained prominence as an artist after releasing her debut single Motion Sickness[2] in 2020. Her work has garnered acclaim and has been described as a "blend of artistry", in reference to her interdisciplinary approach to music production.
Early life and education
[edit]Tara Jam was born on 9 April, 1998, in Toronto, Canada and grew up in the Markham portion of Thornhill in Ontario. She attended St. Robert Catholic High School before transferring and graduating from the French immersion program at Thornlea Secondary School, whilst also studying opera at the Royal Conservatory of Music from ages six through eighteen. She finally moved to downtown Toronto to attend Toronto Metropolitan University (named then 'Ryerson University'), studying creative industries for two years until dropping out to pursue music full-time.
Career
[edit]2020-2023: Career beginnings
[edit]Jam released eight singles before her first album. Her 2020 debut single "Motion Sickness", which she described as being "derived from recalling the sentiments of being immersed in an unknown environment— intoxicated.", was nominated for 'Best Pop Video' in 2021 at the 3rd Annual Canadian Independent Music Video Awards.
In her 2021 dark-pop single "Synesthesia", Jam sings in Farsi, French, as well as English.[3] When asked about the feelings she wished to evoke with the song, she commented: "I hope Synesthesia reminds people of the power of their minds, the beauty of the process, and the magic of our presence.”[4]
The next year, Jam released an alternative-pop single, “BR*K3N TELEPHONE”, being titled after the childhood game broken telephone. It was described as "futuristic" and "eclectic", and in her words was created to "relate the game to real-life communication. Those on the receiving end of a message can misinterpret it, causing feelings of being misunderstood or invalidated. Thoughts become more filtered and less valid as they are exposed and passed through the “ears and minds” of others with their own perceptions."[5]
In 2023 she featured in "Overload", a psychedelic single by "The Neighbors"[6]
2024-present: ODYSSEY and LUNISOLACE
[edit]In August of 2024, Jam released her first album, a two-tape extended play titled ODYSSEY. It features a UK garage single "Closer" and a chill-house single "IN2U".[7]
After her release of ODYSSEY, she announced her next extended play, LUNISOLACE on her website.[8]
Personal life

[edit]Tara Jam was born to parents Mitra Jam (mother), and Bahram Jam (father), who have supported her with her musical and philanthropic efforts. She also has two sisters, Nadia and Roxana Jam.[9] She is Persian-Zoroastrian.[2]
She has worked in music production with her partner and producer "SPVDE" since 2021.
Advocacy and philanthropy
[edit]When Jam was nine years old, she raised over $3,000 for orphans and underprivileged children in Sierra Leone, by selling recordings of original songs for $2,600, before going on to raise an additional $350 selling 35 CDs of an album she wrote named Orphan's Shoes,[10] and finally performing a concert of her songs at a seniors centre for $5 per ticket.[9]
She has also long been an advocate of Human rights in Iran. In November 2023 she held a live concert in Markham, Ontario in support of Iranian women.[11] She also has the slogan 'Women, Life, Freedom' (Persian: Zan, Zendegî, Azadî, زن، زندگی، آزادی) in her Instagram bio, highlighting her support of the Women's rights movement in Iran.[12]

[edit]When asked about her musical icons, Jam responded by naming The Beatles, The Smiths, Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé, Leonard Cohen, The Strokes, Tyler, the Creator, Frank Ocean, and Odd Future. She elaborated by citing "Leonard Cohen's powerful poetry" and "Odd Future's approach towards structure" as some examples of strong influences to her style. She further mentions how "writing music is definitely [her] forte". Due to this, all artists she finds to be influences "are lyrically powerful artists".[13]
