Taylor Kay Phillips is an American writer and comedian from Kansas City, Missouri best known for her work on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and her humor book, A Guide to Midwestern Conversation. A writing team she is part of has won a Primetime Emmy and a Writers Guild of America Award for their work on Last Week Tonight.

Biography[edit]

Phillips was born in Kansas City, Missouri where she attended The Barstow School..[1] Later, she attended Harvard University where she majored in English and was a part of the comedy troupe, On Thin Ice.[2] After graduating, she moved to New York City where she trained at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.[1] Her humor has also appeared in several publications like The Atlantic, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, and The New Yorker.[3][4][5]

In 2022, Phillips joined the writing staff of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.[6] The team's work earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series[7] and a Writers Guild of America Award for Television: Comedy-Variety Talk Series[8]

A Guide to Midwestern Conversation[edit]

Phillips published her first book, A Guide to Midwestern Conversation, in 2023.[9] The book is based on a series of humor pieces she published in McSweeney's,[10] and was named one of the best comedy books in 2023 by Vulture.[11]

Personal Life[edit]

Phillips is married to Colombian writer for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Felipe Torres Medina. She lives in New York City.[1]
