Telelaudo is a Brazilian teleradiology company founded in 2009 by radiologist Flávio Lanes and based in Vitória, Espírito Santo. The company specializes in providing remote radiology reporting and telecommand services for clinics and hospitals across Brazil.[1]

As of 2021, Telelaudo had a team of 120 radiologists and had produced over 4.7 million reports for more than 450 clinics and hospitals nationwide.[2]

History

[edit]

Telelaudo was established in 2009 to offer teleradiology services enabling imaging exams conducted in healthcare facilities to be analyzed by radiologists remotely. This service model was designed to mitigate the shortage of specialized radiology professionals in remote Brazilian regions, facilitating faster diagnosis and treatment.

In 2015, Telelaudo merged with Pró-Laudo, its main competitor in the Brazilian market. This merger resulted in the creation of the largest teleradiology company in Latin America, significantly enhancing Telelaudo’s operational capacity and market reach. In the following years, the company executed three additional mergers with other regional teleradiology providers.[3]

In 2022, Telelaudo achieved Padi accreditation (Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Programme) from the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Commission (Cadi), becoming the first teleradiology company in Brazil to receive this recognition in the radiology sector.[4][5]

Impact and Relevance

[edit]

Teleradiology, a subset of telehealth, plays a crucial role in expanding access to radiology services in Brazil, particularly in remote areas that suffer from a shortage of specialized professionals. Telelaudo has been a pioneer in popularizing teleradiology within the country, contributing to the sector’s growth and spurring the emergence of new companies. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly in expanding access to radiology examinations in Brazil’s North and Northeast regions.[6]

Response to the COVID-19 pandemic

[edit]

Between March and June 2020, 94 hospitals and diagnostic centers across 15 Brazilian states served by Telelaudo reported a 192% increase in demand for chest CT scans. Leveraging its extensive reach in remote reporting, Telelaudo collaborated with the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) by providing anonymized data from over 14,000 exams. This study underscored the critical role of chest CT in the pandemic response, especially in the context of a shortage of RT-PCR tests, and underscored the broader impact of COVID-19 on healthcare services in Brazil.[7]
