Texas Inn[edit]

Texas Inn is a historically significant restaurant with locations in Lynchburg, Harrisonburg, and Richmond, Virginia. Known for its cultural impact and as a beacon of classic American diner cuisine, Texas Inn has played a prominent role in its communities since its establishment.

History[edit]

Texas Inn's origins trace back to 1930 when Issac N. (Nick) Bullington, an advance man for the Ringling Brothers Circus[1], founded the original Texas Tavern after being inspired by a chile recipe he discovered in San Antonio, Texas. The first location was launched in Roanoke, Virginia, in the parking lot of the Thurman and Boone Furniture store on Church Ave.

Within four years, Bullington expanded the concept to Lynchburg, opening an identical restaurant. Following Bullington's declining health and the impact of World War II, the Lynchburg Texas Tavern was sold in 1940 to Charles Van Cleve, who later renamed it to the Texas Inn (Texas Tavern, Inc.).[2]

The restaurant has thrived through various ownerships, maintaining its original menu and concept. The original Lynchburg location was rebuilt in the 1970s at its currently known address, 422 Main Street. A significant moment in its history was when Lynchburg native Dave Saunders acquired the Texas Inn in September 2018[3], promising minimal changes to preserve its historical essence.

Menu[edit]

The Texas Inn has remained true to its original menu, featuring timeless classics such as hamburgers, hot dogs, and the acclaimed "Cheesy Western," which is a cheeseburger topped with a fried egg and signature relish[4].

Expansion[edit]

Since taking over ownership in 2018, Saunders has expanded beyond its original Texas Inn locations in Lynchburg. Texas Inn opened a location in Harrisonburg in 2022, which was part of Saunders' vision to spread the nostalgic charm and classic menu of the Texas Inn to new areas of Virginia.

Following success in Harrisonburg, Saunders initiated a crowdfunding campaign through Honeycomb Credit to finance a new Texas Inn location in Richmond, quickly raising $120,000[5][6][7]. The Richmond location held its grand opening in May 2024[8], which was attended by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin[9].

Cultural Significance[edit]

Since its establishment during The Great Depression, Texas Inn has been noted for its unique cultural incidents and celebrity visits, including Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, Ronald Reagan, and Guy Fieri, among others. It was officially recognized by the Virginia House of Delegates in February 2023 with House Resolution 285 for its substantial cultural and historical impact on the Lynchburg community.

Community Engagement[edit]

The Texas Inn actively participates in community service, from the #86Hunger initiative to support the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to special offerings like $3.14 slices of pie on Pi Day, showcasing its commitment to the neighborhood beyond its culinary contributions.
