The Disco Chickens are an English rock band formed in Caldecote, Cambridge in 2021. The band comprises vocalist Paloma Bacon-Perez, guitarist Sophie Wallis, bassist Daniel Orton, and drummer Zach Chung. They are characterised by their sound which incorporates elements of garage, psychedelic and progressive rock.

The group first formed in 2021 featuring only Wallis, Orton and Chung, for a music project at school. They would play together for various projects until July 3, 2022 when they decided to officially form a band under the name "Crimson Rope", although they did not keep the name long.

The band played as a trio with Orton on vocals at various local events until August 2023, when Bacon-Perez joined the band as lead vocalist after a successful performance together.

The band would continue playing sporadically throughout late 2023 and early 2024, during which they recorded various demos in bands houses. In May 2024, the band united to record their debut single, the double A-side "Siren / Sunshine", which they released on July 21st, 2024. The single was recorded in the living room of Chung's house in order to save money and record at their own pace.

History

[edit]

2021–2022: Early years

[edit]

In late 2021, guitarists Orton and Wallis and drummer Chung formed a group for a music project at school, with Wallis on lead guitar and Orton on rhythm. They stayed together for various projects and continued to play as a group for fun until July of 2022 when they officially formed a band under the name Crimson Rope, with Orton taking up lead vocal duties. Crimson Rope continued rehearsing for gigs until, unsatisfied with the name, they redubbed themselves The Disco Chickens. The Disco Chickens would play various local events throughout 2022, however after feeling that their sound was too muddy and thin, Orton switched to bass guitar.

2023: Line-up change and scrapped recording sessions

[edit]

In mid-2023 the band performed one-off gig for a leaving event with Paloma Bacon-Perez on lead vocals and long-time collaborator Andrew Lomax on keyboards and rhythm guitar. Impressed with the performance and already searching for a new vocalist, The Disco Chickens announced Bacon-Perez as their lead singer in August of 2023. The band announced an EP was in the works for October, before being delayed to January of 2024, but recording progress was slow and after difficulties with their studio, the EP was scrapped.

2024–present: Siren / Sunshine

[edit]

In 2024, The Disco Chickens continued to gig locally but were unhappy with their lack of original material available to the public. Despite difficulties recording in 2023, the band was still keen to record and release their songs. They had released a few demos online anonymously to get feedback, however without any promotion the demos got little acknowledgement.

In early January, the band united for two full days of recording. Inspired by The White Stripes' De Stijl, the band recorded everything in the living room of drummer Zach Chung in order to save money and have more creative freedom than previously allowed in the studio they worked in. During these sessions they recorded two tracks however were unsatisfied with both the composition and recording quality, so these were never released.

After another few months of writing and organising, the band met again for two days of rehearsal and recording. Feeling that the previous sessions, in which they had recorded each instrument separately to a metronome, made their recordings sound thin and robotic, the band opted to record the bulk of the songs live. After recording multiple takes of the backing tracks, the band selected two takes of the songs to overdub vocals, additional guitars and guitar solos onto. Everything on the single was recorded in one day onto a digital multitrack recorder before being mixed on a laptop by Orton. The single, the double A-side "Siren / Sunshine" was released on July 21st, 2024.
