The Grey Nato is a podcast described as a "loose discussion of travel, adventure, diving, driving, gear, and most certainly watches!" Its first episode was published on February 2, 2016, with 278 episodes published as of April 1, 2024.

Hosts

The Grey Nato is hosted by Jason Heaton and James Stacey, both journalists and writers who have been popular with the watch industry and watch collectors and enthusiasts for many years. Upon launch of the podcast, The Grey Nato hosts were called "two of the nicest guys in the biz."

Jason Heaton

Heaton, who resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota, specializes in adventure travel, outdoor gear, and wristwatches, and has over a decade of freelance writing experience for leading publications, both online and in print. He is a certified PADI Technical Diver, a partner in Submerged Archaeological Conservancy International, and a member of The Explorers Club.

Heaton's work has appeared in Outside, Gear Patrol, Men’s Journal, The Telegraph, Wired, Australian Geographic, and Hodinkee, among others. In 2017, The New York Times called him “a test pilot for the world’s most illustrious undersea timepieces .” He is also the creator of the Swimpruf blog.

In 2021, Heaton published his first novel, Depth Charge. The sequel, Sweetwater, was published in late 2023.

As an avid diver and watch enthusiast, Heaton was interviewed about the appeal and real-world usage of dive watches in The New York Times in an article titled, "Does Anyone Actually Go Diving With a Dive Watch?" He was also featured in a Hodinkee video, "Talking With Dive Watch Expert Jason Heaton," for his dive watch expertise.

James Stacey

Stacey, who resides in Toronto, Canada, is a writer, photographer, and podcast host. He is currently the lead editor for Hodinkee. His work can be found in various outlets and on The Grey NATO podcast.

In "Lifestyle Asia," Stacey was recognized as one of the "10 watch collectors to follow on Instagram right now" for 2019.

In The New York Times, Kristian Haagen, a watch specialist at Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers, named The Grey Nato as her favorite podcast, saying, "Their approach is refreshing because they discuss the actual use, and sometimes abuse, of watches."

The New York Times mentioned the podcast as one of six recommendations in its 2020 list of "Watches for Your Ears."

In 2021, Gear Patrol named The Grey Nato as one of the "Great Podcasts Every Watch Lover Should Check Out Right Now."

In 2022, "Luxebook India" named The Grey Nato as one of the "Luxury podcasts to listen to now."
