The Montessori School of Tokyo was founded in 2003 in Tokyo, Japan by Pete Juds and a business parter. The school contains a pre-school, elementary and middle school with a total student population of approximately 170 students from more than 30 countries. The 30 full-time faculty members come from many different countries.[1] Instruction is in English and the school is closely aligned with the Association Montessori Internationale. It is accredited by The International Montessori Council. Located in the Minami-Azabu area of central Tokyo, it is one of the few internationally accredited international schools in the center of the city. The MST Core Values hold that true education should be 'Preparation for Life'.

History[edit]

In 2003, Pete Juds, together with a business partner, founded the first Montessori elementary school in Japan. Now renamed The Montessori School of Tokyo (MST), it was located on a separate campus, together with a new toddler class. The first year saw rapid growth and the elementary class (which included Pete’s own 2 children) quickly grew to over 20 students leading to the securing of a single campus in the attractive area of Minami-Azabu.

Having existed as a toddler through elementary age school for 11 years, MST now caters to children from 2-15 years old with the addition of Japan's first Montessori Middle School.

The campus is close to a number of local parks and in 2011, was further enhanced by the addition of a large garden, giving the children easy access to a natural outdoor environment.

Students[edit]

Students at The Montessori School of Tokyo come from over 30 different countries. Most students are children of expatriate parents working for multi-national companies or foreign diplomatic missions in Tokyo on 2-5 year posts.
