The Opportunity Tree is a nonprofit organization in Phoenix, Arizona that provides support to individuals with Intellectual disability. Founded in 1955 as the Arizona Society for the Brain Injured, the organization initially aimed to facilitate the development of intellectually disabled children's capabilities to lead fulfilling lives.
History[edit]
In 1963, the Arizona Society for the Brain Injured merged with the Self Aid Workshop, forming the precursor to The Opportunity Tree, known as the Arizona Foundation for the Handicapped.[1] [2]
The Opportunity Tree opened a Casa Grande, Arizona center in 1970, extending services to Pinal County, Arizona.
In early 2018, the Arizona Foundation for the Handicapped underwent a rebrand, officially adopting the name "The Opportunity Tree," which was chosen by a member of the organization. Additionally, the organization established its Maricopa, Arizona campus, further solidifying its presence in Pinal County.
Also in 2018, The Opportunity Tree partnered with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to have its members create candleblocks for sale in the Taliesin West. [3]
In 2021, The Opportunity Tree expanded its footprint with the opening of a new campus in Avondale, Arizona, extending its services to the Western Valley of Greater Phoenix.
Services[edit]
Presently, The Opportunity Tree serves hundreds of individuals aged 14 and above across Arizona, offering a comprehensive range of services, including after-school and summer programs for youth, adult day programming, employment services, and community living support.[4]
In 2018, The Opportunity Tree introduced the Youth Transitions Program, known as "Tree Fort".[5]
The Opportunity Tree formed a Special Olympics team in 2020. Dubbed the "Fireslammers", the team has since grown to over 75 athletes, and competes in 8 sports.
In 2022,in collaboration with Hospice of the valley, the organization pioneered a Supported Aging program, designed to support older adults while addressing the challenges of dementia. [6]
