ThorpyFx is a guitar effects pedal manufacturer based in Brackley, UK. Founded in 2014 by Adrian Thorpe and his wife Georgia Thorpe, they together with a team, design, hand-build and sell pedals all over the world.

History[edit]

Adrian Thorpe MBE served as an ATO in the British Army for 20 years, retiring as a Major in 2018. Adrian started building his own circuits for himself back in 2003 and sold the occasional one to friends and local musicians. After a short 2 year break in building he rekindled his joy for building effects pedals in 2012 and by 2014 had a circuit he felt ready for release under his own brand. This pedal was the Gunshot Overdrive which was released on April 1st 2015..^[1] This was shortly followed by the Muffroom Cloud fuzz in August 2015 which changed its name to the Fallout Cloud in 2016 after upsetting the establishment when the pedal was described as the "Rolls Royce of big muffs" by Premier Guitar magazine.^[2]

To date ThorpyFx has released a number of products in order as follows: Gunshot, Muffroom (Fallout) Cloud, Peacekeeper, Warthog, Chain Home, Veteran germanium, Veteran Silicon, Fat General, Team Medic, The Dane, Deep Oggin, Heavy Water, Camoflange, Field Marshal, Bunker, FLIR, Pulse Doppler, Boneyard, Scarlet Tunic, ER-2, Dane MKII, Tacit Blue & Have Blue. Some have since been discontinued or were limited releases.

Design and Pedal Production[edit]

All ThorpyFx pedals are designed either by Thorpy himself or in conjunction with Dan Coggins, the former electronic engineer and co-owner of Lovetone pedals and who now works full time on ThorpyFx circuit design.

All but one so far of the ThorpyFx pedals are analogue through-hole PCB and are loaded and soldered by hand. This is done by a team of solder jockeys based either in Brackley, or working remotely. The soldered and loaded PCBs are then hand wired into custom made enclosures, designed by Thorpe. The enclosures are made from a combination of laser-etched stainless steel, anodised aluminium with silkscreened artwork and a powder-coated steel base.

ThorpyFx has designed the signature pedal The Dane for Peter Honoré, a Danish session guitarist-turned YouTube star. They have also designed the Scarlet Tunic to the specifications and needs of Lee Harris, former guitarist of the Blockheads and now plays guitar in Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets, a supergroup band consisting of Lee, Gary Kemp, Nick Mason, Guy Pratt, & Dom Beken, put together to play the early music of Pink Floyd.

ThorpyFx Collaboration Projects[edit]

ThorpyFx has released two "That Pedal Show" versions of it's pedals. First the Muffroom Cloud in 2015 and then the Camoflange^[3] in 2019, of which That Pedal Show launched the first 100 pedals in production with NOS Matsushita BBD chips.

In 2020 Adrian worked with Victory Amplification to help create the Victory V1 line of pedals^[4]

In 2021 Adrian was asked to contribute to Reverbs "The Pedal Movie"^[5]

Thorpe also co-owns Redbeard Effects with Mikey Demus. Demus is the guitarist for Skindred and they started the pedal company together in 2019.^[6]

Adrian is often asked to provide commentary on pedals and pedal culture for magazines and online resources including Guitarist Magazine and Guitar.com^[7]
