Death and investigations

[edit]

The policeman was found dead on the morning of March 1, 2018 in his house. The death dates back to the previous evening and at first it was said to be a death from natural causes. According to the autopsy results, made public a few days later, he died of cardiac arrest. On the same March 1, 2018, an investigation was opened by the Patti Prosecutor's Office. The following day, his colleague Superintendent Calogero Emilio Todaro also died. Both were investigating clandestine slaughter and agro-mafias. Granata's partner was heard some time later by the Anti-Mafia Commission.

"As for this heart attack that is not a heart attack... but a cardiocirculatory arrest... cardiocirculatory arrest, it's true it can also kill you. But there is a void on the 28th, in which there is no news of Tiziano, of his phone. If you have a cardiocirculatory arrest, it's not like you stay comatose in bed for 24 hours. You can still move, you can pick up the phone, until there is the exitus... I have always thought, then I also told the prosecutor Bonanzinga, that I also suspected poisoning. Because in the period in which I had gone down previously, when we celebrated his birthday which turned forty, Tiziano without eating so had to evacuate quickly, go to the bathroom..."

«His birthday was on February 14th. (…) Then another thing… I raised the alarm that something was wrong from Genoa, calling his brother, because in any case, suddenly we couldn't hear each other anymore, so for me there was something wrong. In the evening (of his death, ed.) Tiziano answered the phone, for the whole day his phone was off or the answering machine answered… so I can't say if it was off or not because it's always the phone lines, but the call came to me several times in the evening, around 8pm, 8.28pm, and I was the one who disconnected the call, because I couldn't hear anyone on the other end… I called Tiziano and my phone showed that they had answered on the other end, the minutes ticked by and there was no voice. So I hung up and repeated this situation four more times, and four times I was answered. I didn't hear anything from the other side... it was me who then disconnected, I mean I was there for 25, 30 seconds too"

(Lorena Ricciardello, Granata's partner)

In 2020, it was revealed through the book I viceré delle agromafie - storia di sbrirri, bovini, malarazza, antimafia e mascariamenti by Luciano Armeli Iapichino that Granata was investigating the fugitive status of the boss Matteo Messina Denaro.
