Toby Francis is an Australian actor, singer and writer. He has appeared in cabaret shows and musicals such as Kinky Boots, Once and We Will Rock You.
Career[edit]
In 2011, Francis was a sketch writing partner for John Cleese during the Just For Laughs International Comedy Festival at the Sydney Opera House.
In 2013, Francis played the role of Billy Nolan in the Australian Premiere of Carrie at the Seymour Centre in Sydney which was produced by Squabbalogic and directed by Jay James-Moody.[1]
In August of 2014 Francis wrote and performed a cabaret show based around the life and music of Jim Steinman called Love and Death and an American Guitar, for which he won Best Cabaret at the 2014 Sydney Theatre Awards.[2]
On 1 May 2015, the Australian Premiere of Dogfight by Pasek and Paul opened at the Hayes Theatre in Sydney with Francis playing the role of Boland.[3]
In 2015 and 2016 Francis toured the US, Australia and New Zealand with The Ten Tenors.
On 30 April 2016, it was announced that Francis would play the role of Charlie Price in the original Australian cast of Kinky Boots at Her Majesty's Theatre, Melbourne[4]. Directed by Jerry Mitchell the show opened on 12 October 2016 and during the run Francis also headlined Beyond Kinky: A Kinky Boots Charity Event which raised over $100,000 for the Beyond Blue charity.
On 18 November 2017, High Fidelity opened at the Hayes Theatre in Sydney with Francis in the lead role of Rob Gordon, made famous by John Cusack in the 2000 film of the same name.[5]
In 2018, Francis joined the arena tour of We Will Rock You in the leading role of Galileo alongside Erin Clare (Scaramouche) and Queenie van de Zandt (Killer Queen).[6]
In February 2019, Francis joined Neil Gooding's production of Jesus Christ Superstar in the role of Judas.[7]
On 26 June 2019, Richard Carroll's production of Once opened at the Eternity Playhouse with Francis in the lead role of Guy alongside Stefanie Caccamo as Girl.[8]
On 20 November 2019, Francis was announced as joining the cast of the hit Australian musical Rolling Thunder Vietnam in the role of Andy.[9] The production was due to tour in 2020 but was forced to close early due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
In 2021, Francis returned to the role of Galileo in Wayne Scott Kermond's production of We Will Rock You playing at the Riverside Theatres, Parramatta.[10]
Francis returned to tour Richard Carroll's production of Once, along with Stefanie Caccamo, in both 2021 and 2023.
