The Ukrainian-Brazilian Central Representation [1][2][3](Portuguese; Representação Central Ukrainano-Brasileira) is a non-partisan, non-profit federal organization that represents the Ukrainian community in Brazil and is a member of the World Congress of Ukrainians. It unites the main societies and organizations of the Ukrainian diaspora.
History[edit]
The first associations of Ukrainians were formed in 1898 and 1910. Over time, associations, organizations, and societies began to form in places of permanent residence. Subsequently, they were united in states and by other territorial principles. However, for a long time there was no institution that would unite all the Ukrainian diaspora in Brazil. Only in 1985, on the initiative of the Chairman of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians (now the World Congress of Ukrainians) Petr Savaryn, the Ukrainian-Brazilian Central Representation (UBCR) was created as a representative body of various Ukrainian organizations in Brazil under the World Organization of Ukrainians.
Organization[edit]
The UBCR consists of the president, 4 vice-presidents, 2 secretaries, 2 treasurers, the chairman of the supervisory board, and the audit commission. The president of UBCR is elected for 2 years at the general meeting of representatives of organizations that are part of the Central Representation. The headquarters of the UBCR is located in the city of Curitiba. Since 2003, Vittorio Sorotyuk has been the head of the UBCR.
Membership[edit]
The UBCR includes the largest associations and organizations of Ukrainians in Brazil:
- The Ukrainian Society of Brazil (until April 2000 - the Bread-making and Educational Union), which, in turn, unites the Ukrainian-Brazilian Club, associations of Ukrainian women and decorative arts, folk group "Barvinok", men's choir "Haydamaki", Saturday school named after Lesya Ukrainka, museum of the history of Ukrainian immigration.
- Ukrainian-Brazilian Society "Sobornist" (president - George Rybka );
- Society of Supporters of Ukrainian Culture
- Association of Ukrainian-Brazilian youth
The Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, which are located in Brazil, actively cooperate with UBCR.
Activities[edit]
The activities of UBCR are mainly concentrated in the southern part of the country, that is, where the vast majority of citizens of Ukrainian origin live. Directs its work to the support and development of Ukrainian cultural, moral and religious traditions in Brazil: Festivals of Ukrainian creative groups in Brazil are organized, events and gala dinners are held annually in honor of the anniversary of Ukraine's Independence, other national and state holidays of Ukraine.
During 2009-2010, the board of the Ukrainian-Brazilian Central Representation carried out painstaking work on the census (cadastre) of local citizens of Ukrainian origin. After that, it was constantly replenished. thanks to this, it is known that the number of Ukrainians in Brazil is about 500,000 people.
It publishes three newspapers, which are published in two languages - Ukrainian and Portuguese. "Labor" and "Missionary" have a religious orientation, and "Breadmaker" has a secular orientation.
Heads of UBCR[edit]
- Afonso Antonyuk (1985—1993)
- Petro Yedin (1993—1995)
- Yosyp Velgach (1995—2002)
- Vittorio Sorotyuk (from 2003 to now)
Maryan Tchaikovskyi, the long-time chairman of the supervisory board of UBCR, made significant contributions to the organisation.
