An untitled I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel is an upcoming American slasher film in development with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directing. Robinson also helped develop the story with screenwriter Leah McKendrick, who will complete the screenplay. Loosely based on Lois Duncan's novel I Know What You Did Last Summer, it is the fourth movie in the franchise, serving as a standalone sequel to I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer and a direct sequel to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 18, 2025.

Production[edit]

Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and screenwriter Leah McKendrick came up with an idea for a new installment to the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise and pitched it to Sony Pictures in the fall of 2022. The pitch was a success, and the film was put into early development in February 2023 with plans to have producer Neal H. Moritz and stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. return in their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson from the original films.[1] Nine days later, Sarah Michelle Gellar told Entertainment Weekly that she had been approached to reprise her role as Helen Shivers from the first I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) film owing to her friendship with Robinson, but declined under the logic that her character undoubtedly died in the original film and it would be impossible to retcon her death.[2]

In March 2023, Prinze Jr. said in an interview that he had not received an offer to join the film, explaining "They just said that to get people excited. I haven't spoken to anyone at their company, my agents haven't received an offer from them whatsoever".[3] Prinze later stated that Original Film announced the sequel without him and Love signed on yet just to excite the fans and that he met with Kaytin Robinson after the announcement to discuss his possible involvement. He noted that the meeting left him impressed with her idea for the film, but noted that he hasn't currently signed on to appear as there's no script and has received no concrete offer yet.[4]

In May 2024, it was reported that Prinze and Gellar are expected to return.[5]

Release[edit]

The untitled sequel is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 18, 2025.[5]
