Włodzimierz Marek Tulczyjew (18 June 1931 – 4 December 2022) was a Polish-Italian physicist and mathematician, known for his contributions to the geometric formulation of classical mechanics and field theory. He was a professor emeritus of mathematical methods of physics at the University of Camerino and a member of the Academy of Sciences of Turin.
Biography[edit]
Tulczyjew was born in Włodawa, a small town in eastern Poland, in 1931. He suffered from the Nazi occupation during his childhood and later participated in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. He studied mathematics at the University of Warsaw, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1959 and his D.Sc. in 1965 under the supervision of Andrzej Mariusz Trautman. He then worked as an assistant professor at the same university until 1967, when he moved to Canada as a visiting professor at the University of Calgary. He became a full professor there in 1970 and stayed until 1988, when he was invited to join the University of Camerino in Italy as a professor per chiara fama of mathematical methods of physics. He retired in 2006, but remained active in research and teaching until his death in 2022.
Scientific work[edit]
Tulczyjew's main research interest was the geometry of classical mechanics and field theory, especially the symplectic and multisymplectic structures that underlie the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formulations, and the Legendre transformation that connects them. He developed several original concepts and methods, such as the Tulczyjew triple, the Tulczyjew symplectic structure, the Tulczyjew-Dedecker differential, the Tulczyjew condition, and the Tulczyjew isomorphism. He also worked on general relativity, gauge theories, quantum mechanics, and differential geometry.
Tulczyjew published over 100 scientific papers and several books, including A symplectic framework for field theories (1979), and Geometric Formulation of Physical Theories (1989). He collaborated with many distinguished mathematicians and physicists, such as Sergio Benenti, Paweł Urbański, Jedrzej Śniatycki, Fiorella Barone, Giuseppe Marmo, Jerzy Kijowski, Margherita Barile, Antonio De Nicola, Giovanna Mendella, Paolo Facchi, Mauro Francaviglia, Maria Rosa Menzio, Giorgio Pidello, Stanisław Zakrzewski.
Honors and awards[edit]
Tulczyjew received several honors and awards for his scientific achievements, such as:
- British Council Scholarship, 1959--1960
- United States Air Force fellowships, 1958, 1960--1961
- Award from Polish Academy of Science for research in relativistic quantum mechanics, 1965

- Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche visiting professorships, 1977--1987
- NATO professorships, 1978, 1980--1982
