Overview

Wavelength Productions is an American film production company founded..[1] in 2015 by Jenifer Westphal[2]. The company is best known for producing films such as Athlete A [3], Knock Down the House[4] and Won’t you Be My Neighbor?[5].

In 2021, Wavelength named[6] Joe Plummer as president, overseeing operations and spearheading development, production and investment efforts across both the film division and a newly launched commercial division[7]

History

In 2023, Wavelength produced Rather, directed by Frank Marshall[8], about the life and times of iconic reporter and anchor, Dan Rather[9]. The film premiered[10] at the Tribeca Film Festival. Netflix acquired [11]the rights to the film in April 2024.

In 2022, Wavelength executive produced 32 Sounds[12], an immersive aural documentary that explores the elemental phenomenon of sound and its power to bend time, cross borders and profoundly shape our perception of the world around us. The film was directed by Sam Green [13]with music composed by JD Samson. The film won the top documentary award[14] at the 2024 Cinema Eye Honors.

In 2021, Wavelength executive produced Let Me Be Me[15], directed by Dan Crane and Katie Taber. The film[16] looks back at the journey of Kyle Westphal and his family as they learn to embrace their son’s unique capabilities and work with him on his path to becoming a professional clothing designer. The film was nominated[17] for a 2023 Outstanding Arts and Culture Emmy Award.

In 2020, Wavelength executive produced Athlete A,[18] a documentary that follows the Indianapolis Star reporters who broke the story of Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse scandal and the subsequent accusations that engulfed USA Gymnastics. The film was directed by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk.

In 2019, Wavelength produced the film, Where’s My Roy Cohn[19], directed by Matt Tyranauer. The film  premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and earned $721,161 at the Box Office.

Wavelength executive produced the 2019 documentary, Knock Down the House[20], about the 2018 congressional primary campaigns of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Amy Vilela, Cori Bush, and Paula Jean Swearengin. The film was directed by Rachel Lears and premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim. It won the U.S. Documentary Audience Award and Festival Favorite Award at the festival. Netflix acquired distribution rights to the film for $10 million, a record number[21]

Braodway

In 2024, Wavelength produced the musical revival of The Outsiders which premiered on April 10, 2024[22]. The company also produced[23] the Broadway return of The Who's Tommy musical , which premiered on March 28, 2024.

The WAVE Grant

In 2019, Wavelength Productions launched the WAVE[24] (Women at the Very Edge) Grant dedicated to supporting first time female filmmakers of color who are making their first narrative or documentary film.
