Ref & Notability

[edit]

Hi User_talk:KylieTastic Thanks for your input. As I understand it, it is the references and notability which is missing in the article. I have added some other references to gnu.org if that helps. Regarding notability is is already mentioned on a lot of pages within wikipedia which I thought would qualify, like Autoconf and printf. Compared to Richard Stallman MacKinzei is much less known, but compared to Eric Blossom or Brian Fox (programmer) he is a the same level in my opinion. Those are people listed at Category:GNU people. Is this article a "far shot" or do you think it could qualify with some corrections/additions? Chlor (talk) 15:45, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chlor, all new articles on Wikipedia have to show the subject is notable (See WP:N) which in most cases requires significant coverage (WP:SIGCOV) in multiple independent (WP:INDY) reliable sources (WP:RS). When first submitted you only had the subjects own blog and YouTube channel so not independent. The new sources are just a very short listing as one of just 250+ people the other is a passing mention. If they are mentioned on other articles that does not directly help but I would check to see if those have any sources that are more than just mentions. Being the creator of a number of well know programs could mean WP:CREATIVE #3. Note that Brian Fox was nominated for deletion but was a snow keep but looking at the WP:AFD archives lots of other programmers have been deleted. Also "David Mackenzie" has been previously created and deleted in 2012 see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/David MacKenzie (programmer). See if you can find some more independent sources with non trivial coverage and if so add and resubmit. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 17:11, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I still think this kind of odd, that Mackenzie is mentioned with in all the article about each program in GNU core utilities like basename, but there is no article about him. Why mention David Mackenzie in basename when he is notable? Chlor (talk) 12:21, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
