Updates to the Page

[edit]

@asilvering new talk started. Please review and advise, on how I can improve on the new draft page to improve it for resubmission. Thank you! :) Hlbrooks (talk) 18:20, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have recreated the page in Draft mode, as the previous version was quite outdated. Given that I haven’t worked with Wiki in over ten years, I wanted to take this opportunity to learn and reacquaint myself with the procedures. It was fun, though I found myself a bit confused regarding the distinction between References and External Links. I believe I may need to add more items to the References section. Could you please take a look at what I've created and let me know if I'm on the right track? I would appreciate any guidance on what else I might need to include to get the page reinstated.
Additionally, I encountered an issue while trying to upload an image and a PDF for the bio, receiving the error message below. I would like to resolve this so I can continue contributing to Wiki in the future, as I really enjoyed the process :)
Automated filter Special:AbuseFilter/281
Commons no longer allows new users to upload PDF files.
This decision was reached because by far most attempted uploads of PDFs by new users turned out to be either copyright violations or out of scope. If you were not the original file designer or photographer, that original creator may need to provide an appropriate license on their official website or public-facing social media, or may send the file and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you.
If you cannot get a compliant license, it is possible that the file may still be uploaded to the relevant wiki in compliance with their local rules. If this upload is your own work, or is someone else's appropriately licensed work, and is within Commons' scope, please go to the page Commons:Abuse filter and click the report an issue with an abuse filter button near the top of the page. @Asilvering I saw the updates that you did. Thank you! I also noted that the listing of boards/affiliations were removed because it is too much like LinkedIn. I will keep that in mind going forward. Is it ok for me to submit the draft fore review?
Also, I have one other question. I would like to add a biography photo. Am I able to apply for a license through Wiki to have the option to do that? I understand that new users do not have the capability to upload photos/pdfs. Thanks again! I greatly appreciate your help on this. Hlbrooks (talk) 19:50, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hlbrooks, I wouldn't submit it yet - it will almost certainly be declined as "promotional", and the references are incomplete or link to unreliable sources. For unreliable sources, see WP:RS; there's a userscript at User:Headbomb/unreliable that is very helpful for identifying sources known to be unreliable. WP:WTW might help you with some of the "promotional" aspect, but the other thing that will help is finding more independent, secondary sources to use, rather than PR notices and so on. -- asilvering (talk) 20:04, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Thank you. I will review what you have sent me and look over the references that I have, before I submit it for approval. Again, thank you so much for your help! :) Hlbrooks (talk) 20:11, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@asilvering I have a question. In relation to the external links that are Accesswire and PR Newswire, I have not been able to find other articles from what would be termed as credible news sources. I did update some of the language so that the wikipedia page is more neutral and does not sound promotional, but I am wondering if it is okay if I removed the Accesswire and PR Newswire articles, since they are not reliable sources, and then submit the page without those links? Is that acceptable? Hlbrooks (talk) 15:08, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hlbrooks, as far as I'm concerned it's so promotional that it could be deleted for that reason. You could start by removing the many duplicate wikilinks and the laudatory comments about other people in there. We don't need to know that he did something with someone who won a Nobel. Accesswire and PR Newswire, whatever comes from there is press releases. If you cannot find credible news sources, that likely means that your subject is not notable. THANK YOU! That is a big help. I had changed some of the language today to make it less "promotional" and more neutral, but your additional comments are a huge help. I will do that now. Thanks! Hlbrooks (talk) 15:16, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Drmies I cleaned it up a bit, as per your suggestions. Would you mind to take a quick look at it? I do need to go back and take out some of the references too. Hlbrooks (talk) 15:36, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There still aren't any reliable sources in here that show that the subject is notable - have a look at WP:N and WP:RS. -- asilvering (talk) 16:10, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
