Erman Zaruddin Usman

Erman Zaruddin Usman (born 1967) is an Indonesian educator, author, poet, and civil servant. He is known for initiating the one teacher one book movement in Riau Islands for which he was awarded as a national literacy figure in 2019.

Usman is married to Ermayati, a civil servant.[1]

Career

Usman started his career as a civil servant at Ministry of Religious Affairs in Bintan Regency in which he established a literation corner at the office.[1] He then served as Head of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Tanjung Balai Karimun.[2] Usman often held a book review at the office by inviting school and boarding school students, and invite them to compose poetry.[1] He later started his writing career by published his first book titled Makku Melayu, a memoir about his mom, and later published another eight books in two years.[1] Usman also initiated the one teacher one book movement in Riau Islands and succeeded in getting 700 teachers to produced 300 books.[1][3] He then established floating library in Riau Islands which focuses on distributing books to children who have difficulty in getting access.[1] Usman also served as Head of Ministry of Religious Affairs in Tanjungpinang from December 2017 until March 2019 and was awarded for his policies in Riau Islands.[4] On 27 February 2019, he published his fifth books titled Gelora Hati Penggiat Literasi, a book about his poetry collection.[3] As of 2023, Usman has published ten solo books and 31 anthology books which earned him a title as the most productive writer in Indonesia.[5][6]

In 2019, Usman was awarded as a national literacy figure in Indonesia for his contributions in initiating the one teacher one book program in Riau Islands.[1] On 10 September 2021, he was awarded at the fifth place for The Best Book on the Subject of Indonesian Pantun by National Library of Indonesia for his work Bimbingan Pranikah Melalui Pantun bagi Generasi Milenial 4.0.[7]
