Ann-Ida och Dan Broström med flera på Svenska Amerika Liniens Gripsholms sjösättning i Newcastle 26 november 1924. När Svenska Amerika Linien startade 1915 hade idén om en sådan funnits länge. Alla de hundratusentals emigranter som lämnat Sverige från mitten av 1800-talet hade rest över Atlanten med utländska rederier. Förutom möjligheten att tjäna pengar på trafiken ansågs det viktigt med en svensk amerikalinje för att skapa en närmare kontakt mellan Sverige och de utvandrade svenskarna.Då emigrationen upphörde förändrades resenärerna och resandet. De fattiga utvandrarna som tidigare varit i majoritet ersattes av mer välbärgade turister. Folk reste för nöjes skull och SAL-båtarna gick på kryssningar till exotiska platser runt om i världen.Gripsholm 1925 var Svenska Amerika Liniens första nybygge. De två tidigare fartygen hade köpts in begagnade från utländska rederier. När hon byggdes var hon den svenska handelsflottans största fartyg och ett av de modernaste på Atlanten. Inledningsvis reste mer än hälften av Amerikaliniens passagerare i tredje klass, i jämförelse med en tiondel förstaklasspassagerare. I takt med att amerikaresandets karaktär förändrades byggdes hon om för att locka nya resenärer. De tre klasserna blev två och fartyget anpassades till turister och kryssningstrafik.Gripsholm såldes till Tyskland 1954. Tolv år senare höggs hon upp i Italien.
