Obergefell possible changes[edit]

Hey everyone, as the decision regarding the possible legalization of same-sex marriage across the country comes near, am curious as to how the future of this map might be assessed. Looking at the calendar date cutoffs implemented, the spectrums seem arbitrary with regard to how much space is covered in each category/color. Was thinking that instead of the usual 5 or 10 year cutoffs used in maps like this, there would be 2 years making up each color. That would provide for an equal amount of space to each one besides the final color, which could be reserved for the hypothetical Obergefell decision. Like this:

2004 to 2006 - Massachusetts

2007 to 2009 - Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Iowa

2010 to 2012 - New York, Maine, Washington, Maryland

2013 to 2015 (pre-Obergefell) - Rhode Island, Delaware, Minnesota, New Mexico, New Jersey, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Florida, Alaska, Guam

Date of Obergefell decision - Assuming it happens, every other state/territory

(Didn't include Kansas, Missouri, and Alabama on account of the continued mess in those states regarding legality)

Let me know what you think. Ghal416 (talk) 00:38, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In case of a consensus on this, looks like the ruling is in the affirmative on same-sex marriage. Ghal416 (talk) 15:54, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I support more than not, but I do have misgivings about more than half of all areas falling under 1 of the 5 categories. But I guess that's more properly the fault of the legalization time-course, which is obviously fair game for this map to represent faithfully. 0nlyth3truth (talk) 17:21, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That is a fair point, considering that some states became legal before then getting involved in litigation (ex: California). Whatever works I guess. The only thing I ask is that if anyone has the opportunity to reflect this key upon the map if consensus is reached, please do so. I would do so, but don't have the tools unfortunately. Also, for the 5 categories...perhaps reverse the colors in order from light blue to dark blue. Ghal416 (talk) 17:47, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am looking at this map, and once everything gets finalized per the Obergefell rulings, only California should be striped. SSM was legalized there in 2008, then it ceased due to an illegal law, and then it resumed in 2013 due to the removal of said illegal law. Thegreyanomaly (talk) 04:20, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah that was what I stated before as well. The colors for the time "2007 to 2009" and "2013 to 2015" (either of the colors used here or new ones perhaps) could be used as stripes on California once everything is finalized, assuming that consensus is reached on this of course (so far 1 support, 1 mostly support). Perhaps a footnote can also be put to explain California's coloring as well. Ghal416 (talk) 04:51, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
